Ceri Phillips | I'm really pleased with the standards in our performance
Swansea City Ladies head coach Ceri Phillips was delighted by a great team performance as side beat The New Saints Women 5-2 in the Genero Adran Premier.
The Swans came into the game looking to return to winning ways after a disappointing draw against Aberystwyth Town Women, and they delivered as they climbed back up to second place in the table.
Katy Hosford started the scoring with a fantastic low shot before Ellie Lake made it two with a stunning effort into the top corner.
A long ball forward from TNS allowed Emily Ridge to fire a great shot to reduce the deficit, but a Nieve Jenkins header soon restored the Swans two-goal lead.
Stacey John-Davis and Monet Legall would both poke home from close range in the second half for the Swans before Ridge picked up a late second goal for the visitors.
Phillips was pleased by performances from his players across the pitch and feels that his side are still firmly in the title race.
“It was a good reaction, which we were sure we would get, and we're happy to finish phase one the way that we did,” said Phillips.
“We asked the girls for a reaction from Sunday where we weren’t quite at the races and we weren’t quite ourselves and I feel like we got that.
“Not only did we score five goals and played some good football at times, we also put the hard yards in because TNS had plenty to play for themselves and they came at us, throw bodies at us and got in our faces and looked for something themselves, so we had to work hard.
“We were good for five goals and I think TNS were good for their two goals as well, on the whole we deserved the result.
“We are really pleased with the defensive side of the game because we were put under pressure at times and we had to dig deep and track runners, in the end the back four had a lot of players they had to pick up.
“The girls adapted really well and dealt with a lot of the problems themselves.
“It’s always nice to see five different scorers and everyone chipping in which is something we ask for across the season.
“There were some real quality goals across the board, we’ve been good from set pieces recently and we scored another one here, so on the whole I’m really pleased with the standard and everyone involved put a shift in.
“We’ve just got to take it game by game in phase two, we have a couple of weeks off now and we are going to put the work in, it’s far from over but all we can do is try and win games of football.”
