Byers: Fans can give U21s a boost
George Byers insists the fans can be Swansea City Under-21s’ 12th man when they face Charlton Athletic in the second round of the Checkatrade Trophy at the Liberty Stadium tonight (7pm).
The young Swans will be looking to write another success story in the trophy having reached the quarter-final last season before losing to eventual winners Coventry City on penalties.
Byers looks set to make his 10th appearance in the competition and believes the young Swans can deliver against their League One opponents.
“We want the fans to come out in numbers tonight,” he said. “They did for us last season and their support helped us progress.
“This competition is massive for everyone in the squad. We are really excited to have reached the knockout stage once again.
“It gives us another chance to play at the stadium and the home support gives us a massive boost.
“We know that Charlton will be a tough team to beat but we have to rise up to that challenge and be ready to play at our very best.
“We felt we could have gone further last season, but that is going to drive us on in this campaign.
“We are keen to make that right this year. Tonight is a good stage to go and prove ourselves against a League One side.
“The Checkatrade Trophy gives you a taste of what first-team football is like and gives us valuable the experience.
“Games like these definitely decide whether you are going to have a career in the game or not.
“If we focus and play our game and get ourselves right tactically we can definitely get a result, and you never know what can happen from there.”
