Blake delighted with U23s debut
Matthew Blake was delighted with a dream debut for Swansea City Under-23s as they defeated Colchester United 5-1 in the Premier League Cup.
The 18-year-old academy scholar laid on two goals for Oli McBurnie as the Swans development side earned their first win in Group D.
The defender lined up alongside Argentinian international Federico Fernandez in a team that fielded a mix of youth and experience.
And the left-back, who has featured 10 times for the under-18s this season, will now target more game-time with the under-23s.
“It was great to take the step up and get my first start with the under-23s,” he said
“I love being an assist maker and was pleased to have had an impact on the game.
“The set-pieces we scored from were planned. We worked the plays well. Both went perfectly and Oli was there on both occasions to finish them off.
“Playing with experienced and older players really helped my game. The intensity and physicality at this level is tougher and challenges you more.
“These are the games I want to be playing in, so it was great to be able to show what I can do. I am fighting to earn a professional contract so I want to play as many of these games as possible.
“We have a long way still to go in the cup, but I hope I can help the side retain the title this season.”
