Ben Cabango reveals pride at league debut
Ben Cabango spoke of his pride after making his league debut for Swansea City in Tuesday night’s draw at Huddersfield.
The 19-year-old replaced injury victim Mike van der Hoorn at half-time at the John Smith’s Stadium, and didn’t put a foot wrong as he and Ben Wilmot helped make sure Steve Cooper’s side emerged with a point.
Cabango had featured during the Swans Carabao Cup campaign, and has been among the young players handed first-team status by the head coach having made an impression over pre-season.
And the defender hopes there is more to come after making a big impression.
“It was a surreal feeling coming on at half-time. Obviously, they weren’t good circumstances because of Mike getting injured,” he said.
“However, it gave me the opportunity and I’m very thankful to the gaffer for putting me on. Hopefully, I’ve done well enough to stay in the team.
“It means a lot to me, I am proud to have made my league debut. All the hard work I’ve put in has been worthwhile. I’ve been on the bench a few times and had to be patient, but my time came today.
“When the gaffer told me I was going on, I had to take a deep breath and realise what I was going into.
“It was a tough, intense game against a good Huddersfield side. I needed to get up to speed quickly and carry on the boys’ performance.
“But I felt confident out there. The boys helped me out a lot and eased me into the game. It’s a great dressing room here.
“All the boys helped me, especially with me coming on at half-time in such an intense game.
“All you want as a defender is to keep out goals as much as you can. Getting the draw today was a good result because not many teams will come here and leave with anything."
