Ben Cabango to captain Swansea City
Head coach Luke Williams has confirmed Ben Cabango is set to become Swansea City captain, with the centre-half ready to lead the side out against Coventry City on Saturday.
The 24-year-old, who recently penned a new contract through to 2028, has skippered the Swans at every level since joining the academy at the age of 14, including leading the senior side in a Carabao Cup tie at Oxford in 2022.
Cabango’s leadership qualities have regularly been highlighted by Williams, as well as previous head coaches, and he described the defender as a “warrior”.
“We have Ben Cabango who can step up into the role of captain. He is a player who has captained the club at every level he has played at, and has come through the academy,” said Williams.
“He is very much someone in the mould of a leader and it is his time to shine now and we move forward.
“It was a pretty easy decision, because he is someone I think everyone respects on the staff and among the players.
“I see him as somebody who is prepared to do whatever it takes for the team, to put his body on the line, to try and make one more action in the build up and be brave.
“He has all the leadership qualities, he tries to motivate people, he’ll give people a ticking off at the right time, and encourage those around him when they need that encouragement.
“The things I see make me believe he fits the mould really well.
“We also have experienced players around him who have a responsibility to help him be a good captain and grow into the role.
“I know they will show him the respect, and make sure others show him the respect so he can lead people effectively and I know they will do that.
“Ben is very happy to take on the challenge, he knows what it means and he is very proud to lead the team. The players respect Ben, he is a good person and I am sure he is going to do great.”
