Azeem Abdulai wants to keep standards high for Swansea City U21s
Azeem Abdulai was delighted with another victory as his first goal for Swansea City Under-21s helped seal three points against Hull City in the Professional Development League.
The Swans had got off to a dominant start and were well deserving of a two-goal lead thanks to goals from Cameron Congreve and Ruben Davies, but the visitors found their way back into the game and Josh Hinds pulled one back before half-time.
The Swans showed maturity and patience in the second period, keeping the ball and controlling the tempo of the match on the Swansea.com Stadium pitch before Abdulai finished off a sweeping forward move with a side-footed finish across the keeper.
It was the young Swans’ fifth win in six games as they mount an impressive late charge for a play-off place in the southern section of the competition.
“I thought the boys played really well,” said Abdulai.
“We’ve been in good form recently and we’ve just carried it on into this game.
“I was buzzing with my goal to be fair. I don’t score many but I thought I took it well and we were able to see the game out.
“I think as a team that [bigger pitch] suits us better. Because of the way we move the ball, I think it means we can tire the other teams out and, at the end of the games, it creates more space for us.
“Compared to last season where I think we only won five games, now we’re just setting our standards and we know what we want to achieve by the end of the season.”
The Swans’ next opponents are table-toppers Millwall who are eight points ahead of the Swans having played two more games.
“I think we’re just looking at every game as it comes,” Abdulai said of the upcoming clash.
“The last three times we’ve played Millwall I think we’ve dominated the game. So we want to do the same and get the result.”
