Azeem Abdulai "buzzing" to open Swansea City goalscoring account
Azeem Abdulai was “buzzing” after opening his Swansea City account with his first senior goal for the club by scoring in stoppage time against Gillingham in the Carabao Cup.
The Swans advanced to the second round of the competition as goals from Ronald, Liam Cullen and Abdulai saw off the Gills 3-1 on Tuesday evening.
The Scot was handed his second start in a week, after making his first league start for the Swans in their 1-0 loss to Middlesbrough last weekend.
And Abdulai rounded things off for Swansea in the final moments as he found the net with a low strike after Jisung Eom had burst into the box to deliver.
The 21-year-old started last season in the first-term picture before suffering a hamstring injury which sidelined him for three months.
Now, back to full fitness and with a pre-season under his belt, the Scotland Under-21 international is hoping to kick on, and netting his first goal was a welcome boost.
"It was a good game for me personally and physically," said Abdulai.
"It was a difficult one for me at the weekend against Middlesbrough, it was my first league start for the club and it did not go as I would have hoped, but this has now renewed my confidence with the win and a goal.
"We've been working hard since the weekend, we wanted to put things right, and we can hopefully take this into the weekend.
"I'm buzzing to have scored my first goal, I just want to kick on from here.
"I've felt the goal coming, because the gaffer has been playing me higher up, and it's a position I'm getting comfortable with, and it's a learning curve every game
"I've felt fitter than ever, after a tough pre-season with double sessions. The staff and coaches have worked us really hard.
"I'm really looking forward to Saturday against Preston now, we wanted the win to spur us on and we'll continue to work hard in training to give the fans a good performance."
