Coach Anthony Wright was pleased with the way Swansea City Under-21s applied themselves against a senior men's squad after they progressed to the second round of the Nathaniel MG Cup with a 4-0 victory at Carmarthen Town.

First-half goals from Iwan Morgan (2), Ben Lloyd and Glory Nzingo sealed a dominant win over the JD Cymru South outfit at Richmond Park.

The Swans received a wildcard entry to this season's competition, and this first-round tie marked the first time they had featured in the tournament.

And they thoroughly enjoyed their cup bow with all the goals coming in the first half, with the hosts being reduced to 10 men when Greg Walters was dismissed after the scoring had been completed.

Wright praised his team's performance, despite the game landing early in their pre-season preparations.

“I'm really pleased with the overall outcome, it was a big test for the boys. I thought Carmarthen applied themselves really well," said Wright.

“Our boys kept the ball moving, waited for vital spaces to open up and they took those chances and scored four really good goals.

“We scored two quick goals around the 25-minute mark of real high quality. The quality the boys showed in the first half was really pleasing to see.

“It’s only our third game of pre-season. Many of the boys have only played 45 minutes here and there. It’s unusual for a competitive game to come this early in our calandar, however it was great to watch.

“It's a new competition, it only aids the development of our young players and that’s why we’re in here. As we saw today, we rose to the challenge against some more senior players.

“At times, it was a bit physical, but it’s good for our boys to understand how they can apply themselves to those situations, which I think they did really well overall.

“We’re right in the middle of our pre-season at the moment, I’m pleased the boys got through it as it is an early game to have.

“We’ve got a couple of games to build up our strength before the season starts, and the boys have done brilliantly so far. We all can’t wait for the second round now.”
