Anthony Wright praised the quality of Swansea City Under-21s' goals after they ran out 5-1 winners against Birmingham City in the Professional Development League at St. Andrew’s.

The Swans surged into the lead as Thomas Woodward netted twice inside the first 25 minutes. The Blues pulled one back not long after through a powerful Kurtis Havenhand strike approaching the half-hour mark.

But Morgan Bates sealed the win with his second-half treble, his second as a Swans player since joining in September, as the visitors romped to victory.

The fixture also marked a full return for centre-back Filip Lissah following an eight-month stint on the sidelines through injury, whilst the bench consisted of first and second-year scholars.

"I thought we started the game really well, and we got two good goals in the first half. If I'm being honest, we did get quite sloppy after that. We had a lot of the ball, but we were far too safe with it," said Wright.

"We made a few mistakes in possession which ultimately led to their goal before half-time, which was disappointing to concede.

"Our second-half performance was a lot better, we were a lot cleaner with our work and that was rounded off by scoring three goals.

"When we score goals, we tend to score very good goals that are very well worked. But then, we go up the other end and allow the opposition to score cheap ones.

"That's a big learning curve we'll look to build on next season, and it's something we need to be better with. But I'm really pleased for Morgan [Bates] and Woody [Thomas Woodward], they are in real good form.

"We finished the game with nine scholars on the pitch, which for us as a club is brilliant, and the substitutes made a real impact."
