Alicia Powe retires after 20-year career with Swansea City
Swansea City Women’s defender Alicia Powe has announced her retirement from football, bringing down the curtain on an outstanding 20-year career with the club.
Powe joined the Swans in 2004 from Llanelli Reds, and spent two decades with the Swans before playing her final game against Aberystwyth Town earlier this month.
During a silverware-laden stint with the club, Powe led the side to four South Wales Women’s League titles, six Genero Adran Premier titles, three Welsh Cups and two league cups; captaining the Swans for 10 years before handing on the armband this season.
Powe also represented the Swans in the Champions League on five different occasions, playing in nine qualifying matches at the highest level of European club football.
The defender admits there are mixed emotions about bringing an end to her playing career, having made memories that will last a lifetime and been an important part of the growth of Swansea City Women, which has seen the team become semi-professional within the last 12 months.
“I think it was always going to be hard to close this chapter of my life,” said Powe.
“I have mixed emotions, on one hand I’m extremely happy I was able to have all these amazing experiences at the club, but, on the other, I feel sad that my football career has come to an end.
“I’ve had the best time at Swansea City. I’ve had so many highs, and of course I’d be lying if I didn’t have some lows, but football really did become a huge part of my life.
“I’ve played football with some of the best players, been coached by some amazing people and made friends for life.
“I will cherish forever the memories I’ve made over the past 20 years. I’ve loved my time at the club and wouldn’t change it for the world.”
Everyone at Swansea City would like to thank Alicia for her incredible efforts over the years and wish her the best for the future.
