Alan Sheehan | That second-half showing was unacceptable
Caretaker head coach Alan Sheehan apologised to Swansea City’s supporters for the “unacceptable” second-half performance in their 5-0 defeat at Southampton.
Goals from Joe Aribo, Sam Edozie, Ryan Fraser (2) and Che Adams gave the home side all three points at St Mary’s.
The Swans had chances through Jerry Yates and Jamal Lowe during the early stages, and were in touch when trailing to Aribo’s deflected opener at the interval.
But, when Edozie capitalised on a defensive error to double Southampton’s lead the game got away from the visitors with three goals arriving during the final 16 minutes plus stoppage time.
Interim boss Sheehan took responsibility for the defeat, but made clear he was less than impressed at the manner in which his side had handled the setback of going 2-0 down shortly after the interval.
“In the first half we were well in the game, we created some chances. In the second half the manner of the goal we conceded left us with an uphill battle,” he said.
“But I did not like a whole lot after that, we made changes to try and freshen it up and get on the front foot but it did not work and I take responsibility for that.
“We’ve had an honest conversation in the dressing room, that’s the first one of those performances that I have had, so I will have to learn from it.
“It’s our job to pick ourselves up and be ready for the next game.
“We know that’s not acceptable, that second-half performance is not acceptable for the club.
“Apologies to the fans for that, I take responsibility, but we need to be better. It’s not acceptable but we need to learn from it and make sure it does not happen again.”
