Nia Jones v TNS

Swansea City Women suffered just a second defeat of the season as Lexi Jones netted a stoppage-time winner for The New Saints Women.

The final outcome was tough on the Swans, who played more than an hour of the contest with defender Nia Jones in goal, following an injury to goalkeeper Charlie Haynes.

They had looked on course for a hard-earned point, only for Lexi Jones to strike for TNS, who had been responsible for Swansea’s only previous loss of the campaign.

The Swans - facing a side who had beaten them 5-0 in their previous meeting- started brightly and had an early chance when top scorer Aimee Deacon headed wide from a Chloe Chivers’ free-kick.

Chivers sent Emily Richards in on goal just five minutes later, but her first-time effort was easily collected by the keeper.

Chivers was heavily involved and she came close to scoring herself as her free-kick from distance whistled just wide of the post.

But the Swans were dealt a huge blow as a stray knee caught the on-rushing Haynes on the head as she came for a ball, forcing her to be replaced by Katy Hosford, with defender Jones pulling on her gloves.

TNS didn’t trouble Jones in the first half, their best effort being a free-kick from Helen Evans that flew over the crossbar.

Early in the second half, Hosford hit the bar with a stunning effort as her long-range volley dipped and clipped the woodwork.

The Swans defence remained strong, despite midfielders Sammy Wynne and Chivers having to play out of position at right-back and centre-back respectively, as the visitors battled strongly.

There were appeals for a penalty for the Swans as Deacon was pushed in the box, but those appeals were waved away.

With eight minutes to go, Jones produced an incredible save to deny TNS substitute Lexi Jones, pushing her curling effort wide of the post.

But TNS would win it in the final moments, Lexi Jones' stoppage-time strike finding the bottom right corner to earn all three points.
