Charlie Patino celebration

Second-half strikes from Charlie Patino and Jerry Yates sealed Swansea City's place in the fourth round of the Emirates FA Cup with victory over Morecambe, and gave Luke Williams a win in his first game in charge at the Swansea.com Stadium.

Patino could have put the Swans in front in the first half when his headed effort was well saved by Shrimps keeper Adam Smith, but he made no mistake when he toed in from close range from Sam Parker’s cross. The Arsenal-loanee very nearly had a second minutes later, heading inches wide from Azeem Abdulai’s cross.

The second goal came in the final minutes when Jerry Yates lashed home a volley from the edge of the box.

Williams was in the dugout for the first time after being confirmed as the Swans’ new head coach on Friday afternoon.

And there were wholesale changes for the Swans with none of the those who started in Monday’s victory over West Bromwich Albion named in the XI to face the League Two visitors.

Academy products Parker andAbdulai were handed starts, while Kyrell Wilson and Filip Lissah were named among the substitutes. Joe Allen wore the armband with club captain Matt Grimes on the bench. Andy Fisher made his first appearance of the season in goal.

The Swans had all of the possession, but chances of note were few and far between in the opening 45 minutes.

Abdulai’s right-footed piledriver from distance was deflected into the side netting inside six minutes, while his second similar attempt three minutes later - with the fans urging him to repeat the effort – was blocked.

Patino’s 15th-minute effort was the best on offer in the first half. He drew an excellent save from Smith when he headed on target after Abdulai’s cross to the back post was kept alive by Yannick Bolasie, with the keeper at full stretch to tip over.

Bolasie was then inches away from a wonder goal when he curled a dipping effort from the edge of the box which landed on top of the net.

At the other end, an under-hit back pass by Patino had Jake Taylor interested, but Fisher was off his line quickly to clear, while Morecambe had a few half-chances from set pieces without actually testing the Swans keeper.

Charlie Patino goal

The Swans got off to the perfect start in the second period.

Nathan Wood’s strong run from centre-back eventually saw him get the ball to Parker, who drove infield and curled a ball to the back post which Patino deftly turned in.

And Patino could have had a second minutes later when he headed Abdulai’s cross inches with of the far post.

The next 15 minutes were a bit scrappy. Substitutions and numerous fouls played their part as the Swans exerted a little less control than they had displayed in the first half.

But two passes of real quality – the first from Bashir Humphreys and the second by Patino - released Parker in down the left. The teenager’s attempted first-time cross was too far ahead of Yates, while his second run had seen him stray narrowly offside.

The Swans got back control of the ball, dictating play. Some good one-v-one defending by Kyle Naughton and Wood denied Morecambe any real chances. Substitute Tom Bloxham’s off-target shot from distance the only effort of note.

Yates sealed the fourth-round spot late on when a miscued clearance fell to him at the edge of the box, and he finished left footed into the bottom corner for his seventh goal of the season.

The Swans had a couple of chances to make it 3-0 late on. Grimes had an effort blocked and Mykola Kuharevich side-footed one wide as Williams enjoyed a winning start.
