Swansea City bowed out of the Carabao Cup at the hands of Premier League Bournemouth after an entertaining tie at the Swansea.com Stadium.

Matt Grimes gave the Swans an early lead from the penalty spot after a handball by Chris Mepham, but the visitors made changes and responded in the second half with goals from David Brooks and Hamed Traore turning the tie around.

Jamie Paterson pulled the Swans level with 15 minutes to go with a drilled shot from outside the box, but Ryan Christie regained the lead for the visitors in injury time.

It was cruel on the Swans, for whom there were plenty of positives to take as they took top-flight opposition all the way.

Michael Duff had made five changes to the side who lined up against Preston North End on the weekend. Josh Ginnelly was handed his first start for the Swans while there were also starts for Joe Allen, Kyle Naughton, Ollie Cooper and Azeem Abdulai.

The Swans started the game on the front foot and were well deserving of their lead when Grimes blasted home from 12 yards in the 10th minute.

They'd forged a well-worked move with Allen and Cooper combining to launch a counter-attack which released Josh Key down the right. His first time cross was put behind for a corner before Ginnelly could capitalise.

Ginnelly was then hauled to the ground by Mepham to give Grimes and opportunity to swing the ball in from the left. The initial cross was headed clear but, when Cullen volleyed on target, it struck the arm of Mepham leaving the referee to award a penalty which Grimes dispatched.

The visitors settled into things after going behind, and created plenty of half-chances throughout the half, but failed to force Carl Rushworth into a save.

Traore looked the most likely for the Cherries. He had two half-chances from 20 yards, drilling one wide and dragging the other off target.

And Harry Darling did just enough to put Brooks off when he lined one up from the edge of the box, causing the Wales international to scuff wide.

But the Swans stayed organised out of possession, and continued to carry a threat on the break.

Traore came the closest to a goal for the Cherries when his effort on the spin struck the post with the final kick of the opening half.

Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola made three changes at the break, and Jaidon Anthony had already forced a save from Rushworth before Brooks levelled the scores 10 minutes after the restart.

It was Anthony’s volleyed pass into the feet of the Welshman which cut through the Swans defence, and Brooks was able to slot the ball inside the far post.

Traore had the ball in the net shortly after the hour mark after he met a cross by Anthony, but was flagged for offside.

But the Ivory Coast international had one that counted shortly after. Brooks got to the by-line and cut the ball back to Dominic Solanke whose header came off the post, but Traore reacted first to put the ball in from close range and give Bournemouth the lead.

The Premier League side continued to press and Rushworth made saves to deny Traore and Solanke, while a combination of Rushworth, Ben Cabango, Harry Darling and Naughton kept the ball out when Solanke and Traore raced through - but it wouldn’t have counted anyway as the flag went up for offside.

With 15 minutes remaining, the Swans levelled things when they won a corner which was cleared to Paterson. He took a touch onto his left foot and hit a shot through a sea of bodies. It took a deflection en route and nestled in off the far post.

Rushworth was on hand to make an excellent save to deny Anthony after Bournemouth hit the Swans on the break.

But the keeper could do nothing when Christie side-footed in injury time from just inside the box.
