A late Swansea City fightback saw Steve Cooper’s side earn a point against Wycombe Wanderers and close the gap to the automatic promotion spots at the Liberty Stadium.

After a goalless first half, the visitors struck twice inside the first six minutes of the second half as Admiral Muskwe and Garath McCleary found the net.

That left the hosts facing an uphill struggle, but a Jamal Lowe penalty and a header from Liam Cullen saw the spoils shared.

And Watford’s defeat at Luton means the gap between the Swans and the Hornets is down to six points with four games of the season remaining.

Both sides had a number of chances, with Lowe, Connor Roberts and Wayne Routledge all denied by a combination of saves and clearances for the Swans.

Cooper had made the one change to his starting line-up as Roberts came in for Routledge, while Cullen was named on the bench as he returned from nearly three months out with an ankle injury.

The Swans were looking to pick up where they had left off in wins over Millwall and Sheffield Wednesday, and they nearly had a sight of goal inside the opening minute as Joe Jacobson had to make a timely challenge to prevent Ayew getting a shot on goal.

However, that would be Ayew’s final involvement as he required treatment after holding his leg and was replaced by Routledge, whose entry into the fray marked his 300th appearances for the Swans since joining in 2011.

Routledge was involved in the build-up as a defensive slip allowed Roberts in on goal, the winger got away from his man but saw his left-foot shot saved by David Stockdale in the Wycombe goal.

The keeper was soon sprawling again as a fizzing drive from Conor Hourihane beat his grasp, but also flew wide of the far post.

Wycombe responded with Muskwe turning into the area to get away a shot that was blocked by Matt Grimes, on what was the skipper’s 150th appearance in Swansea colours, with Freddie Woodman gratefully clutching the loose ball.

Dennis Adeniran then steered wide after excellent work from Curtis Thompson had teed up his midfield partner near the penalty spot.

Just before the break Swansea threatened again, Routledge showed great strength to win possession and teed up Roberts, who cut onto hist left foot but saw Stocksdale save at a comfortable height.

It was level at the interval, but just 16 seconds into the second-half Muskwe opened the scoring as he fired an unstoppable volley past Woodman from distance.

Swansea sought an immediate response, with Lowe cutting in from the left and getting away a low shot that Stockdale just about managed to kick away.

Chances kept coming, with Woodman soon tipping a Uche Ikpeazu header onto the bar.

But the keeper could do nothing about McCleary’s low strike after he was allowed to cut into the area far too easily.

Those quickfire goals prompted three changes from Cooper as Hourihane, Fulton and Kyle Naughton all left the field as Morgan Whittaker, Korey Smith and Yan Dhanda came on.

The Swans were denied from two big chances in quick succession, with Lowe getting away from Jack Grimmer and Stockdale, but lacking immediate support saw him effort saved, before Routledge’s follow-up volley was cleared off the line by Grimmer.

Ryan Manning’s drilled effort was gathered in by Stockdale inside the final 20 minutes before the Swans were handed a lifeline when Jason McCarthy handled the Irishman’s low shot.

With Ayew off, Lowe took on the responsibility from the spot and blasted home his 13th goal of the season with 10 minutes to play.

And just two minutes later Cullen timed his run perfectly to turn in a pinpoint Roberts cross and level the scores.

That left seven minutes of normal time and seven minutes of stoppage time for the Swans to find a winner, but they could not find that one chance to snatch all three points.
